Awards and Agreements

The leading award covering the Australian construction industry is the National Building and Construction Industry Award 2000. This is a CFMEU award that applies to trades-persons, non-trades and plant operators. The CFMEU ensures that all major contractors in the industry are bound by the terms of this award.

Other major federal CFMEU awards include:

  • Building and Construction Industry (Northern Territory) Award 1996
  • Building and Construction Industry (ACT) Award 1991
  • Mobile Crane Hiring Award 1996.

The CFMEU has also made various state awards, the terms of which flow from the NBCIA.

These industry awards act as a foundation for the thousands of collective agreements negotiated by the CFMEU for our members.

In recent years, agreement making has become the main means of achieving substantial improvements to rates of pay and conditions. Such agreements can take a variety of forms, from industry wide agreements such as the Victorian Building Industry Agreement, to site agreements and agreements covering members employed by a particular company.

All of our agreements reflect the success of combining an industry-wide approach to bargaining with a strong and united membership. Construction workers are amongst the best paid blue collar workers in Australia.

For more information about the current bargaining round, visit your state branch page.
