CFMEU NSW Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Unit

  • Conducting Workplace Safety Inspections

  • Conducting Workplace Accident and Incident Investigations

With over 30 years experience, CFMEU Safety coordinator Brian Miller has a wealth of experience and hands on knowledge of the construction industry.

Brian is responsible for coordinating the CFMEU’s safety campaigns, workplace inspections and accident investigations. Brian is called upon by all CFMEU organisers and delegates to help keep construction sites safe and make sure all employers are complying with their obligations and all relevant OHS legislation. Brian is also the chair of the Safety Field Day Committee. For a site visit contact the CFMEU’s Safety coordinator Brian Miller or the relevant field organiser.

Gerry Ayers is the CFMEU's full time OHS Advisor. As well as having over 15 years experience in the industry, his formal qualifications include a Masters Degree in Applied Science (Occupational Health and Safety) and a Graduate Diploma in Occupational Hazard Management.

Gerry’s role is to provide accurate and up to date information and advice to all officials and members of the CFMEU and the Building Trade Group of Unions (BTG) on a range of OHS issues. He is one of the CFMEU’s 3 representatives on the Construction Industry Reference Group (IRG) - the others being State Secretary Andrew Ferguson and Legal Officer Rita Mallia. He is also a member, together with the CFMEU’s Furniture Division’s Senior Organiser Brad Parker on the Manufacturing IRG (which covers CFMEU members in the Furniture Trades Industry). Gerry also represents the CFMEU/BTG on many different WorkCover Codes of Practices and other relevant industry and government OHS working parties and committees, and carries out research on many and varied OHS subjects. He is also responsible for the analysis of OHS legislation and providing submissions and comments on behalf of the CFMEU to government regarding any proposed legislative changes to do with occupational health and safety law.
